A Camelot for Sufferers of Chronic Pain

The Choice – I Bid You Choose Love

The Choice

A woman came out of her house and saw three old men with long white beards sitting in her front yard.   She did not recognize them.   She said, “I don’t think I know you, but you must be hungry.   Please come in and have something to eat.”
“Is the man of the house home?” they asked.   “No,” she said, “He’s out.”
Then we cannot come in,” they replied.
In the evening when her husband came home, she told him what had happened.
“Go tell them I am home and invite them in!”   The woman went out and invited the men in. “We do not go into a house together,” they replied.
“Why is that?” she wanted to know.
One of the old men explained,  “His name is Wealth,”  he said pointing to one of his friends, and said, pointing to another one,  “He is Success, and I am Love.”
Then he added,  “Now go in and discuss with your husband which one of us you want in your home.”

The woman went in and told her husband what was said. Her husband was overjoyed.
“How nice!” he said. “Since that is the case, let us invite Wealth.   Let him come in and fill our home with wealth!”
His wife disagreed.  “My dear, why don’t we invite Success?”
Their daughter-in-law was listening from another corner of the house.  She jumped in with her own suggestion:  “Would it not be better to invite Love?   Our home will then be filled
with love!”

“Let us heed our daughter-in-law’s advice, ” said the husband to his wife.”  Go out and invite Love to be our guest.”
The woman went out and asked the three old men,  “Which one of you is Love? Please come in and be our guest.”
Love got up and started walking toward the house.  The other two also got up and followed him. Surprised, the woman asked Wealth and Success: ” I only invited Love, why are you coming in?”

The old men replied together:  ” If you had invited Wealth or Success, the other two of us would have stayed out,  but since you invited Love, wherever he goes, we go with him.

Wherever there is Love,  there is Wealth and Success!!!”
“Where there is pain, we wish you peace and mercy.  Where
there is self-doubting, we wish you a renewed confidence in
your ability to work through it.  Where there is tiredness,
or exhaustion, we wish you understanding, patience, and
renewed strength.  Where there is fear, we wish you love,
and courage.”

Note from Lady Sharon, Knight of the Pain Table:

Every moment we make choices.    Choices determine which direction we are going and how we are going there.    When you live with chronic pain, the choices in your life become more limited.    When the field of choices is narrowed, it is very difficult to adapt.    It is as if, instead of playing a symphony, you can just play a few solitary music notes.

I have noticed that many people, who suffer a great deal of pain,  often see the world differently.   The pursuit of wealth or being a successful person in the world’s eyes, seems to become much less important.   It feels like you go straight through the suface of the shell into the guts of life.

Why is it wise to choose love, and not wealth and success first?   Because love is real.    And because love can dismantle  feelings of powerlessness.

When you suffer with pain, if you are able to work,  you often must choose part time work, or choose a job that you can manage while in pain.    This position will most likely not be what you wanted to do with your life, or have that image of success that you once wanted.   I believe that to choose Love first will enable you to work with meaning, no matter what you do, because any work done with love is truly the finest work that exists.

Khalil Gibran wrote this of Work:

And what is it to work with love?
It is to weave the cloth with threads drawn from your heart, even as if your beloved were to wear that cloth.
It is to build a house with affection, even as if your beloved were to dwell in that house.
It is to sow seeds with tenderness and reap the harvest with joy, even as if your beloved were to eat the fruit.

The definition of “success” is malleable.   We have the ability to choose the definition of success.  It does not matter what the world thinks.   The world may not see what your heart holds or how far you have travelled with such a heavy load.   Only you can see that.
So perhaps when we have to make choices we should try to let Love in our house first.
