Knights of the Pain Table

A Camelot for Sufferers of Chronic Pain

Joan of Arcadia Findeth the “Gift” and “I Believe in You” Il Divo with Celine Dion

I Believe in You

Joan of Arcadia was a drama on television about a teenager named Joan (Amber Tamblyn), who begins having conversations with God similar to that of “Joan of Arc”.     God appears to Joan in a variety of human forms including a child, a punk rocker and a security guard.    When God talks to Joan in each show,   He asks her to perform certain tasks, which often do not make sense to Joan.     Some of these tasks will make her look foolish or challenge her beliefs.     Even when in doubt she doth listen to God and slowly begins to see that her single actions can have far reaching effects.

Joan may not understand,  that what she has to offer to God is worthy,  but she learns to surrender since that is all she has and she hopes that God can find something precious in it.

In the episode the “Gift”, God asks Joan to give a gift to her boyfriend Adam  (Christopher Marquette),  whom she just begun dating.    She begins by looking at general gifts and then attempts to give him some money when he is short, which he refuses.    God then tells her that the money was not a gift, but an attempt to avoid giving.    God then says,  “Giving is not about things.     A gift is an offering; a selfless act that adds something to someone’s life, something that they need and only the two of you can decide the value of the gift.     The hints are everywhere.    Find out what he needs.”

She then tries to look through his school bag for more clues and makes an assumption based on what she finds.     She becomes confused as she tries to understand what direction God is directing her.    She discusses her confusion with her friend, Grace  (Becky Wahlstrom).   Grace after listening to Joan says,  “In my Hebrew class,  the Rabbi talked about giving.  The act itself makes you love the person more.  The Hebrew word “to give” has the same root as love.”

Joan decides that Adam may need more intimacy between them and attempts to give him physical intimacy,   but that is halted when she realizes that her assumption is incorrect.   During her talk with Adam she finds out that he has lost belief in himself and he needs something to hold on to.

As Joan departs from Adam,  she meets God,  once again and tells Him that Adam needs to have faith in himself and that it was up to God to give him faith.    God then says to Joan, “That is your department.     Faith is believing when there is no rational reason to believe like you seeing me.  Who would believe that that is rational.   Yet you know it is true.    You are the one who has the faith Joan.   Find a way to give a little to Adam.”

Joan then finds a gift that demonstrates to Adam that she understands him and believes in his special gifts.     She now has found the true gift.

As December knocks on our doors we step into the season of giving.    I believe that one of the greatest gifts you can bestow upon anyone is to believe in him or her.    And if all you have to give is your Faith then perhaps that is the greatest gift of all.

Before you is a hauntingly beautiful song,  I Believe in You”,   sung by Il Divo and  featuring Celine Dion.

I,  King Arthur of Camelot, your humble King,  would like to giveth thee a gift.   Wrapt in a cloud of faith, deep in my heart a blue rose grown for you from the seeds of belief.     If a rose can be blue, then I doth “Believe in You”.

And I am your King and ever will be,   by the grace of God,  which ever have you in his keeping.

King Arthur,
The Knights of the Pain Table in Camelot

P.S.     I doth wonder if the greatest gift to give God is to Believe in Him.

I Believe In You lyrics
(Duet with Il Divo and Celine Dion)

Lonely the path you have chosen
A restless road, no turning back
One day you will find your light again
 Don’t you know
 Don’t let go the chance

Follow your heart
Let your love lead through the darkness
Back to a place you once knew
I believe I believe I believe in you

Follow your dreams
Be yourself an angel of kindness
There’s nothing that you cannot do
I believe I believe I believe in you

Someday I’ll find you
Someday you’ll find me too
And when I hold you close
I know that it’s true
Follow your heart
Let your love lead through the darkness
Back to a place you once knew
I believe I believe I believe in you
Follow your dreams
Be yourself an angel of kindness
There’s nothing that you cannot do
I believe I believe I believe in you
