“Hometown Glory” by Adele Adkins – Soulstress of London Beginning her Ride
Adele Adkins
Adele Adkins listened to Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald growing up in Tottenham, UK. If you listen carefully to her single “Hometown Glory”, one hears an edginess and sultriness that is reminiscent of Etta James. Adele is carving out her own signature in the world of music. Her album “19”, named after her age, has gone straight to the top of the UK charts in its first week. Her single “Chasing Pavements” is at number 2 and “Hometown Glory” has entered the chart at 32.
Listen to Adele singing Hometown Glory Live on a BBC 2 show called “Sound”, which aired 27th October 2007.
It is so refreshing to hear young artists that are fusing different music worlds. Amy Winehouse is a genius when you listen to her sing, and has sparked a great deal of interest all over the world. We pray Amy finds her way through the mire of self destructive forces that challenge her, as she has such a great gift. Adele, who sings in a smoky retro jazz pop cobweb of sound, is just beginning.
Adele Adkin’s wrote “Hometown Glory” about her hometown of London. The song is rather haunting and reflective. It captures the sort of relaxed absorption when walking through the streets and the unexpected excitement that can erupt in such a vibrant city. This young singer has talent and we thinketh she is on a very interesting road.
We live in an age where we have access to such a vast array of music from different eras in history and music from different parts of the globe. It is so invigorating artistically when artists merge their gifts with past and present. We doth salute Adele for being open artistically and we doth wish her a beautiful ride this year with her debut album.
Play on Adele, Play on….

Lyrics to Hometown Glory
I’ve been walking in the same way as I did
Missing out the cracks in the pavement
And tutting my heel and strutting my feet
“Is there anything I can do for you dear? Is there anyone I can call?”
“No and thank you, please Madam. I ain’t lost, just wandering”
Round my hometown
Memories are fresh
Round my hometown
Ooh the people I’ve met
Are the wonders of my world
Are the wonders of my world
Are the wonders of this world
Are the wonders of my world
I like it in the city when the air is so thick and opaque
I love to see everybody in short skirts, shorts and shades
I like it in the city when two worlds collide
You get the people and the government
Everybody taking different sides
Shows that we ain’t gonna stand shit
Shows that we are united
Shows that we ain’t gonna take it
Shows that we ain’t gonna stand shit
Shows that we are united
Round my hometown
Memories are fresh
Round my hometown
Ooh the people I’ve met
Are the wonders of my world
