Platelet-rich Therapy- A New Drug-Free Breakthrough for Chronic Pain
Pain specialist, Dr. Gordon Ko, from Toronto’s Sunnybrook Hospital, spoke to CTV News about a new therapy that has a unique approach to treat pain. The new therapy is called Platelet-rich therapy (PRP), and it consists of injecting a patient’s own blood into the area that is in injured.
This exciting treatment does not involve surgery or drugs. It can be used to treat tendonitis, knee ligament tears and other injuries that may occur in athletes or regular patients.
A vial of blood is taken from the patient and then spun in a centrifuge to separate the plasma. This procedure results in a high concentration of platelets, and other growth factors in the blood. Platelets are tiny cells that circulate in the blood and whose function is to take part in the clotting process.
When injected back into the site of the injury, the plasma begins to rebuild and re-strengthen the muscles and ligaments. The body begins to heal. Canadian trials will begin soon.
