Deep Brain Stimulation Relieves Severe Chronic Pain – Mr. Nik Patel – New Operation
Chronic Pain
For those of us who have severe chronic pain, suffering becomes a way of life. So it is so elating to hear a story about someone who has found some relief with a new type of treatment.
The Daily Mail Online in the UK, interviewed a young man, Gary Hodder, who was in a very serious accident three years ago, and who suffered horrendous pain since then. Even though he had tragically lost his arm in the accident, he was still receiving horrific pain from the amputated limb. This phantom limb pain did not respond to medications or physiotherapy so he was left in a place of great despair.
Gary’s surgeon called Mr Nik Patel, a consultant neurosurgeon at the Frenchay Hospital in Bristol. Mr. Patel told Gary about a operation where electrodes could be implanted in his brain that would switch on the body’s natural painkillers. They would be powered by a generator implanted in his chest.
Mr. Patel explained that in certain conditions where the nerves are traumatized, the nerve connections, which transmit pain, become affected. This can cause the brain to think you are in constant pain, even though there is no obvious reason for the pain. The surgery involved drilling two holes in the skull and placing electrodes in the brain, which would be powered by a generator implanted in the chest. This procedure would cause the brain to switch on the body’s natural painkillers.
Gary agreed to the 5 hour operation. He was in shock when the pain began to fade after the operation and he was able to sleep. He suddenly could carry on living instead of just surviving day to day. We are so thrilled to hear of this great success story that has saved Gary.
For those who do not suffer horrendous pain, it may seem like an intimidating procedure. But for those who constantly suffer, they already have lost their life in almost all respects to the pain, so relief of the pain is critical.
We thank Gary for sharing his story and we thank Mr. Nik Patel for helping those who suffer the greatest.

Wilcume,
I do think that anything concerning the brain is always a bit puzzling, as it holds secrets that we have yet to unlock. For those who suffer with chronic pain, those secrets, may hold answers that will alter the pathways of pain. I do thank you and wish thee luck always!
