Revolutionary Treatment for High Blood Pressure – Renal Sympathetic Nerve Ablation

Renal Sympathetic Nerve Ablation

A new exciting development has happened in Britain concerning a procedure that appears to reduce blood pressure. A team at the London Chest Hospital carried our the procedure, called “Renal Sympathetic-Nerve Ablation, in one hour.   The Daily Telegraph observed the procedure and is now making the results public.

Dr Mel Lobo, a specialist in clinical hypertension at Barts and the London NHS Trust, said: “This is the most exciting development in hypertension since the advent of anti-hypertensive medication 50 years ago.

There are an estimated 15 million people in Britain that suffer with high blood pressure, and millions more around the world.    For some their high blood pressure remains even after taking medication and reducing their salt intake.

The nervous system, in these patients, keeps sending messages from the brain to instruct the kidneys to leave large amounts of salt in the blood.   As the salt increases, the volume of the blood increases.    This causes a rise in blood pressure.

This new procedure, Renal Sympathetic-Nerve Ablation,   causes interference in the signals going to the kidneys.     Prof Martin Rothman, a cardiologist, performed the procedure by passing a wire into the main artery leading to the kidneys.    Then he made a series of one-millimetre burns on the inside of the blood vessel, which damaged the adjacent nerves.     By disrupting the signals, the blood pressure then drops.

By lowering blood pressure the results can show a 50 per cent reduction in stroke mortality.

This procedure reminds me of the Liberation Treatment from Dr. Paola Zamboni to treat Multiple Sclerosis ( MS ).     It is exciting to see these new developments, which may reduce the suffering and death of those afflicted.

We thank all those doctors and scientists that are thinking in a new way to understand diseases and health conditions.

  1. Antoniades says:

Where can I have this treatment?

  2. Lady Sharon says:

    Dear Antoniades,

I thank you for dropping by. I do not know your location so you may have to follow up in your area, but I will give you some guidelines. So far they are in the process of doing clinical trials, so it will be awhile before it is offered as a procedure to the public.

The Symplicity® Catheter System by Ardian is not yet commercially available. Initially, it is being studied in a series of carefully designed, rigorous clinical trials in the US, Europe and Australia. These studies are focused on establishing the safety and effectiveness of the system in reducing blood pressure in patients with uncontrolled hypertension.

If in the US you can keep up to date on clinical trials here.

Ardian was the company which developed the equipment for the surgery. They would probably know the latest developments that are taking place.

The patient in this article was one of 110 patients taking part in a trial to evaluate the new technique.

Dr David Collier is senior clinical trials fellow at the Biomedical Research Unit at Queen Mary University, London, and was involved with this study. If you are in the UK perhaps you could contact him for direction in your area.

  5. Everyday consumption of the natural sweetener could increase blood amounts of protective antioxidant compounds in the system. It is believed that honey includes about the same range of antioxidants as green vegetables, for example broccoli and spinach and also comparable to fruits such as apples, bananas, oranges and strawberries. And also the antioxidant degree in mead , a wine created with honey is believed to become comparable to white wine in terms of its antioxidant capability. Generally, it’s been known that dark honey lowers cholesterol a lot more effectively than lighter honey. For instance, Buckwheat honey includes the highest levels of antioxidants. The consumption of honey and cinnamon, mixture also has been reported to have innate healing characteristics that appear to help diabetics manage both blood vessels sugar and levels of cholesterol.
