Wild Gorilla Kwibi Remembers Old Friend Damian Aspinall

Kwibi and Damian Aspinall

"When I remember thee, my earliest Friend!"
~S.T. Coleridge

The Aspinall Foundation is a registered charity which works in conjunction with Port Lympne and Howletts Wild Animal Parks in England. For 10 years they have been reintroducing captive gorillas back into the wild of West Africa.

This is the story about one of those gorillas, called Kwibi. Conservationist Damian Aspinall raised Kwibi in England and when he was five years old Kwibi was released into the forests of Gabon, West Africa. That was five years ago and now Kwibi is 10 years old and much bigger and stronger.

This video shows the journey of Damian Aspinall to find Kwibi and the moving reunion of two old friends. Will Kwibi remember Damian?

This project "Projet Protection des Gorilles", of reintroduction has been very successful so far. Overall survival rates of released gorillas have been very high; 84% in Congo and 84.6% in Gabon.

The Aspinall Foundation has been working with the governments of the Republic of Congo (Brazzaville) and Gabon to protect nearly one million acres within the unique savannah ecosystem of the Batéké Plateau that spans these two countries. This is one part of their project which will help stop the rapid decline of the gorilla.

A film "Gorilla School" was made, which tell the stories of Gorillas and their reintroductions back into the wild. The film is produced by Aqua Vita Films Ltd
